Special Needs Visitors
The Disability Services Commission and the City of Perth provided input during the design phase of the building to ensure maximum accessibility for people with special needs.
From the very beginning of the design of the building, the requirements of disabled visitors were given the highest priority. The building provides for wheelchair and stroller access, a lift that accesses all levels, a large format disabled/special needs toilet (which provides a seated area, sink and shower facilities for guests with special needs, including parents with babies or young children, bellringers and staff). The lift is also fitted with a duplicate set of control buttons to allow for larger wheelchairs that are unable to turn in a lift.
The Square surrounding the Bell Tower provides ramped entry and tactile tiles for blind visitors to mark the edge of the water features and pedestrian crossings.
Swan Bells is also a participant in the Companion Card – a National Disability Services WA initiative to enable disabled members of the community to be accompanied by their carer free of charge.
Disability Access
The Bell Tower tower provides for disabled access throughout the building, with a spacious glass enclosed lift and special needs bathroom facilities. The interactive demonstrations run by volunteer bellringers are enthusiastically inclusive of special needs visitors, ensuring everyone can enjoy their turn at ringing the bells. The Belltower and Barrack Square provides wheelchair and stroller access, incorporating access ramps into the design of the wharf themed wooden boardwalk, supplying tactile tiles for blind visitors and disabled toilets.
Visitor Services & Testimonials
The Bell Tower is an Accredited tourism business dedicated to the highest standards of customer service. The Bell Tower’ friendly and attentive service personnel have a depth of knowledge of the Bells, the building, as well as extensive local knowledge to assist visitors.
Customer comfort ~ A set of 26 stylish and comfortable chairs were purchased for visitors’ comfort, so they can sit to enjoy the Bell Ringing demonstrations and enjoy the view and displays while watching the bells ring on the Belfry level, or simply take a rest from the stairs. The chairs have been a welcome feature for the tower and in a special initiative some monies raised by volunteer Bellringers activities were used to pay for some of the chairs which now hold gold plaques to show the Bellringers’ contribution.
Languages ~ to enhance the hands-on experience for the international mix of visitors it is important to cross language barriers. Allowing visitors to chime bells and participate in activities such as listening to change-ringing recordings, reduces the reliance on written material and ensures that the visitor experience is much more personal. Interpretive materials are also provided for visitors in a range of languages.
